I have a Lionel Berkshire that has a signal problem that I am unable to diagnose. No other engine on the layout (DCS and TMCC) has this problem, (one other Lionel and six Atlas Locos and four MTH). The entire layout has ground plane wires installed under all the tracks and my meter shows a good connection to ground. What happens on this Locomotive is that the headlight starts flickering (I Know that this indicates Poor Signal) but if I wave my hand over the Loco, About three to six inches above it. The flickering stops and the loco continues to run. If am not near the Loco it will stop. Again if I put my hand over it and notch the throttle up or down a couple of clicks it starts up again. Some times I dont have to have my hand over it and it will start. Any suggestions will be welcome.

Grandpad,
Is this a newer legacy berkshire, or the TMCC version released around 2003? If it is the TMCC version, I have one that had that exact same problem. All other engines ran fine, but that one would stop and start and the lights flickered badly. I had Alex M here on the forum work on it, and now it runs great! I don't recall at the moment all of the work he had to do, but he had to replace some components, and I asked him to upgrade the chuffs to 4 and to upgrade the smoke unit. Alex is the best, and he's a super nice guy. I would recommend contacting him, he will make your engine run like new!

Taking a stab in the dark here, but maybe it would be worth cracking it open to check the antenna wire.
Either partially grounded antenna (hand rail) or the Receiver on R2LC is bad and need to swap in another R2LC and reprogram. Of course always try a reset first, but R2LC fail, and seem to be failing at a higher rate now that they are older. G
