Hi,
Can anybody tell me if a Lionel GP30 in Burlington paint is a high end Legacy model or a low end model?
Its catalogue number is 6-28840
I’m told the Lionel GP30 is the most accurate.
Thanks

Hi, it's a TMCC engine and it's really nice. I have one and it's a good runner. Got it new in the box at a train show a few years ago.
The engine you listed is not Legacy, was made in the early 2000’s
I have these GP30’s in many roads and they are great. Good detail, run well and sound fantastic
I have the very same model in very good condition, lightly run, for sale if interested. Great engine. Pics of it are in the for sale forum, on page 7 now. Very good asking price is listed as well. Give yourself a Christmas present! Send me an email.
They are very very detailed. Just be sure to check on which road number and phase you’re looking at, as some phases had different cab dimensions on the fireman’s side, and railing numbering. The Bachmann GP30 is also a detailed model for the later phases mentioned above.
6115 below is Lionel TMCC, with extra details like the ATS shoe and long hood mounted side bell and Kadee-equipped fixed pilots.
6121 is a Bachmann shell. Notice the longer cab behind the fireman’s window and the “missing” stanchion beyond that. The NYC didn’t have the longer cab phase.
So I’d say it comes down to which phase.
thanks,
Mario
Hi Mario,
Your Lionel GP30 looks to be 2 rail. Is this original or converted?
Also I didn’t know Bachman did O scale.
My layout will be freelance so phase is not important. I’m just looking for a very detailed model.
Thanks Daryl

In that case, go with the Lionel if it is finished in the paint scheme you want. You’ll have to convert it to 2R.
UPDATE: Williams also makes a CB&Q GP30 and the shell is available by itself here: https://estore.bachmanntrains....j6erfsj6j2rdlvkgfas4
thanks!

IIRC, someone makes a replacement frame that makes this conversion easier than swapping wheels on the Lionel trucks, and uses off 2R shelf trucks.
I’ll have to think about it.
Mine is 3-Rail Scale; for now.
thanks.

Mario,
Is the Bachman GP30 body as good as the Lionel for detail?
I’m only after the body.
Daryl
IMO, no.
The Lionel details, handrails and lettering are better. But, they are close.
Luckily, I have both shells on hand for future builds. 6115 is Lionel and 6121 is Bachmann.
Here’s a monkey wrench for you...
CB&Q’s GP30s were phases 2a & 2b, according to Trainweb.
http://www.trainweb.org/jaydeet/gp30.htm
Some had the shorter cabs and stanchion right behind the cab as in #940 below, and some the longer cabs of the Bachmann shell, like #971.
I didn't know Lionel made 2 rail engines?
I have been told if you mention 2 rail on the 3 rail forums, your posts are deleted.
North Lima has the shell in stock, Lionel part #6208840007.
The description on the Lionel support page says that it doesn’t have the battery hatch (rear fans). I’d make sure you know all the part numbers you’d need to order.
thanks!

They don't, ever since they made those Smithsonian NYC locomotives & cars.

Wrong!
If you want to see all the work I did on fixing the pilots and adding details, please check out this thread.
