Hi all,

I am just getting started with my Lionel cab 1 L unit on my layout. I am considering buying a mth GG1 with protosound. What is your opinion of adding and mth engine with protosound with my CAB 1 L? Please advise what mth proto sound would be best for me to buy, proto 1, proto 2 or proto 3? Will I have most all the functions and sounds?. What are the negatives of combining mth with TMCC? As always thank you very much for your expertise.

Jerry

I've used proto 2 engines w/ the cab1 TMCC (not cab1L) before with no problems. Its like using the proto 2 engine with conventional control, sounds worked along w/ horn/ whistle and bell. It even fired the coupler via the remote. I had no issues, just can,t change the chuff rate or anything like you could do with a dcs set-up. You have to operate it like a conventional engine using the remote to regulate the track voltage.

I run PS-1 locomotives with the Cab-1 all the time.  All MTH locomotives will only act as conventional locomotives with any of the Lionel remotes, so you will be using the remote to control the track voltage with a PowerMaster.  If you don't have a PowerMaster (Or recent ZW.) you will not be able to use the handheld to control the MTH locomotive.

I run P2 and P3 engines with my Cab1L, Powerhouse 180 and a Legacy Powermaster.  The powermaster allows for variable voltage conventional control of the P2 and P3 engines.  The Powermaster also simulates the fast button press sequences to fire the couplers and do the announcements.  All you have to do is press the coupler buttons on the Cab1L and the P2 and P3 engine couplers will fire.  You can also perform a factory reset on the engines with the Powermaster.  You will not get all the full features of DCS.
