A Mikado lettered for C&O was recently offered by Lionel...l assume this is not a good model of an Alco that could be upgraded to a K-2-3a, with addition of brass Elesco, pumps, and Vanderbilt?

Is the Lionel model a Light Mikado? If so, then it would be seriously undersized for any of the C&O K3 series 2-8-2s.

First of all, just look at photos of the real thing and the model. Then, if it's a Light USRA Mike or a Heavy USRA Mike ( I don't remember which C&O's Lionel has offered), Lionel's models are quite good, so comparing the dimensions of the real Mike you want to model and the real USRA Light and Heavy Mikes will give you a dimensional comparison. Many C&O Mikes had lot of USRA DNA.

The Heavy USRA from Lionel lacks nothing in the beefy-spec department; I've got one (L&N). One of the best-looking steamers Lionel has ever offered.

Which Lionel model are you asking about - The Lionchief  or Legacy versions? The Lionchief is of course undersized and is just their generic Mikado. The Legacy version engine's number 1062 would make it an ex Pere Marquette, C&O class K5. However it should have an air pump on the pilot deck and most important a much larger tender with six wheel trucks. Neither version is a very good representation of a K5.

Thought there was very little variation between the light & heavy?

The boiler diameter is visually larger on the heavy Mikado, same as on the Heavy pacific, i.e. the boiler is larger than a light pacific.

Ah, thanks Hot Water. I think you had told me this last year when during one of the topics on the Light Mike's Lionel offered last year or one of the other topics about them. I think someone had said that they had the same wheel base but that there was something different in terms of something else, that's what I couldn't remember.
