That's because MTH actually builds and sells the old tin plate gems through their dealer network.
Thank goodness for MikeWolf's passion for these beauties.
There are a lot of threads on the MTH Tinplate / Lionel connection in the archives.
Explanation is quite simple. A few years back Lionel granted MTH a license to use their trademarks on MTH tinplate. Lionel apparently has some role in the decisions about what will be made and makes some money. MTH gets to use the Lionel name on its products. Seems both are happy with the arrangement as the agreement was recently renewed
