I purchased a Lionel 4-6-6-4 Vision Challenger (2010 version I believe, SKU: 6-11210) new/never opened (still in shipper from Lionel) and right out of the box I noticed that the driveshaft to the front set of drivers was not connected. This is my first Vision Line locomotive. I can see where the pin has fallen out of the driveshaft above the drivers set, or one was never installed. I’d like to find a replacement pin to put back in, but before I dig into the locomotive I’d like to ask ahead of time if there is anything I should watch for or be careful of, as I’d hate to break something in the process of repairing this.

Im assuming removing the articulation drive wheels would be the easiest way to get to the driveshaft?

Not to discredit the two posters above who are great.

maybe you could email or wait for a few techs to reply? I don't think it's terribly hard. I believe the handrails on the rear of the cab have to come off if this is the one I'm thinking of?

Alex M might know better? Here's a sample post of his.

I like Alex's insights and experience

"I thank you all for the nice comments!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But if you read my thread I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE WARRANTY, I FIX REPAIR AND UPGRADE LIONEL ENGINES ON A DAILY BASIS. I've open up every engine I've ever bought, and i

opened this one up and posted it here, so everyone can see the inner workings of it.

I’d like to find a diagram of the Challenger if possible, if not I’ll carefully proceed my way into it and use the Big Boy’s as a point of reference.

On another note, I found the pin, which appears to be broken. Based off Lionel’s parts website it looks like I’ll have to get a whole driveshaft assembly (only $12 at least. Kind of a bummer that it had an issue right out of the box, but it could always be worse I guess!

I also noticed the fans for the smoke units seems to be a little loud, so I may as well check that out while I’m in there! I’ll try to get some pictures and post them for if anyone else was to have the same/similar issue
