Over the weekend I got around to installing and wiring up a postwar Lionel conveyor coal loader and coal ramp. I haven't run these in ten years or so since they were on my last layout. I remember on my old layout having a problem with the "coal" working its way in under the belt and jamming things. So I bought a box of Lionel 6-24148 "Coal Tipple Coal Pack". I know, I know, this isn't the coal tipple, but isn't the conveyor loader for the tipple the same one as the postwar version? Is there anything different about the belt? These tipple coal pieces are quite large, like the size of an unground coffee bean. These don't jam the belt anymore, but they also seem too big to go up the belt! Does anyone have any advice on what I can do here? Use a different coal? Are Lionel newer conveyor belts different somehow where they handle this coal? I've tried different voltage to the loader motor, but that doesn't help much.

On occasion the different dollar type stores carry bags of small stones/gravel in white or black. The diameter may be of sufficient size to preclude jamming the mechanism.

I use the product as a coal load in gondolas by inserting a piece of styrofoam in the gondola then coating it with adhesive (I prefer a clear silicone) and sprinkling the stones over the silicone. Needless to say, paint the white stones black.

I have had success using black aquarium gravel,  Buy a bag at Petsmart.  Dump out a quantity and manually pick out the "medium" sized pieces.  How to describe "medium"?...the big ones will look too big to be grabbed by the ridges on the belt, kind of like the tipple coal you bought.  The small pieces will get stuck under the belt.  What's left is medium!

Seriously, using this product, I almost never have anything stick.  As you use the loader, weed out the troublesome pieces, if any.

Good luck.
