I have the Lionel 6-37996. I am sure it has not much more or less than 2 hours of operation. It acquired a grinding and groaning sound and finally quit working. The motor sounds like it is humming, (or something is humming), so I need to get it fixed. Has anyone had the same problem? What is the probable repair? Since I bought it over a year ago before being put into operation it is not in Warranty. Thanks for your suggestions, as I would like to repair myself if possible.

The Gear on the motor that makes this wok is split... Lionel been making the newer style control towers for some time just look for ones that have three metal rods going to the tower and you will see them.. I replaced mine and all is good Lionel  last year said they did not have the part but they do if you go to the older part numbers that use the same one... I got a new motor with a new gear on it..

This tower came out in 2013 I believe, and is a re-issue of the original green yellow version. It does have the three rods you speak of. I have the unit opened up, I can see the two gears and the motor. I do not note any split gears, they seem to be in complete condition. The motor just hums. Perhaps it is a motor failure??
