I think Lionel has some of the best crew talk sounds on their engines. I have both MTH and Lionel and enjoy them both but I think Lionel is a notch better. One of the things I think Lionel could do to make them even better is to start putting the cab numbers back into the sounds. I have a few of the older Heritage SD70 that have this feature as well as theVisionline Big Boy that uses cab numbers and I think it just sounds better than the generic cab chatter. Anybody with me on this

Crew talk is a very personal and subjective feature. A lot of guys don't like it especially in steam engines. The simple solution is not to use it. I don't mind it as it adds play value. I personally like the road and cab number specific call outs Lionel used to put in all the engines. Lionel in the past few years now saves that for VL engines only citing memory savings and customer feedback.
I would just like Lionel to realize you don't "start her up" on a steam engine.....
I am with you on this, but the "engine specific announcements," as I call them, are a "vision line only thing," according to lionel. The solution? Either continue what you are doing, which is great, or purchase TMCC Railsounds 5 engines or engines made before 2011 as most of them have the "engine specific announcements" before lionel made it a "vision line only thing." I personally follow the later, buying only engines that have engine specific announcements, (unless it is VERY inexpensive or something I want bad enough.)
Just my 2 cents.
I find crew talk irritating at best.

I use to listen to the train yards on my scanner. Crew talk doesn't even come close to the way those guys talk and sometimes what they said which was pretty hilarious at times.
Crew talk is a personal choice. You don't have to push the button.
I too like hearing the cab number called out. It was my understanding that there was not enough space in the board after they added other things...However I'm not a program expert.
I only use crew talk when there are kids watching me run trains.
