Dave, I have to disagree with you somewhat regarding this statement. The CW-80 is a very capable transformer when used with modern Lionel equipment. The circuit protection features are far superior to those found in earlier transformers such as the ZW and KW, and the wave-form produces superior performance at lower voltages too.

I would not recommend a single CW-80 for those wishing to run older power hungry locomotives, as 80W does not go far with them. I also would not recommend it for those running some early MTH Protosound locomotives. But for those running modern can-motor equipment the CW-80 is an excellent choice. I have several of them, and would never change them for older transformers. (At least, not unless I took up welding as a hobby! )

I dont know why anybody would throw one away.

I guess it all depends on a persons ability to understand how it works and fix problems.

I've taken apart several cw80's. Even fixed a few. Usually, when all else fails, you can strip the thing down to just its transformer core and use it as a fixed voltage brick. Only once have I encountered a faulty transformer core and it went into the trash.

I also have to disagree with everyone who suggests getting rid of CW80s. I have 4 CW80s powering my layout and have had no issues. I have 2 set up for cab control or TMCC powering my two main loops. I have a third powering my elevated line and a fourth powering my switches and accessories. I run all modern equipment and have no problem running two TMCC diesels MU'd with two motors in each. The CW80 also works just fine with my proto3 loco and DCS remote commander.

Heck I even run my Marx tinplate with a CW80 and works fine for one of those locos too!

You can pick them up on eBay, at train shows and even some hobby shops. I know some dealers on eBay buy ready to run sets and sell them off piece by piece. They run under $50 for new CW80. A great deal in my book!

I won't hesitate to buy a new ready to run set if I like the train because its almost like getting the track and transformer for free if I buy from MB Klein/Model Train Stuff That is how I ended up with 6.

I am with Flash I would never throw one away!
