I have a diesel few engines from early 2000's that have a sticky tape between the chassis and the body. What was probably a good idea almost 20 years ago is now nothing but a gooey mess.
First I assume the tape served no real purpose.
Second, isopropyl alcohol takes the goo off the chassis with no problem. Using a q-tip on the underside of the shell I started to see a little paint come off. Any suggestions for removing the residue left on the shell?? Goo gone??

You really don't want this crap on your hands. Goo Gone is the first choice...
I suspect they were sealing the seam for some reason. I just clean it off, usually with Naphtha, then put it back together without it.
Didn't have Naptha on hand, Goo Gone did the job.
One issue with Goo Gone...
If you've never used Goo Gone before, you might not realize that this powerful adhesive remover tends to leave a light residue behind. To remove greasy residue, use laundry detergent or an all-purpose cleaner and a clean cloth.
This is why I try to stick to solvents that don't leave anything behind.
