I recently purchased a Lionel 6-16928 SOO Line dump car. It has a brown v-shaped dumper. I can't figure out what this car would have carried as a load. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Rick

I think it’s only based on your imagination. If you are running scale perhaps check on a SOO prototype.
Perhaps a photo on here would give us a clue.

If it's Soo Line, iron ore would be correct but coal would not. The car has too much cube for a full load of ore, so it should be only half full.
The other most likely commodity would be construction aggregates- sand and gravel. Nearly all railroads used their hopper cars for sand and gravel, including railroad ballast. There are sand and gravel pits almost everywhere so the average length of haul was less than 200 miles.
Hi Rick,
I too have one of the Soo Line 16928 dump cars. I always thought of it as a “toy train” accessory rather than a prototypical rail car due to the small hopper and the upright handle on one side of the bin. That handle makes it very easy to dump the contents out. I really like this car and it’s on my watch list for future train shows. I’m sure my grandson arriving next month will enjoy playing with it someday. Here’s a photo. Sorry it’s kinda dark.
