I just purchased a Lionel Engine 6-18294, the issue is the fuel tank has the optical reader on the bottom. The cab number is correct for the Lionel product ID number but not the electronics? Any thoughts?

Well more fun with this engine, all 6 wheels have flanges, one set should be blind. Just another fun fact.......LMAO

Like others have suggested the fuel tank is probably from another engine.  This was probably one of the K-line by Lionel engines.  One of the complaints with it was the fuel tank was not prototypical.  As for the sensor, if it works someone has upgraded the electronics.  I would not mess with it if everything works, as you said it is a great puller.

Sensor works fine, yet the engine is tmcc. In the end it works fine pulls great and can do anything with tmcc and legacy track sensor….its a freak

If that sensor "works fine", what does it do?  Define "works fine".  If the sensor does anything on a Sensor track, the engine has Legacy electronics, there's no other way it would function.

Except it will only work properly with the TMCC commands. I only asked basically to see if anyone else had this, it runs so and works fine so TMCC or what it s not and issue

I guess I still don't understand if the actual sensor is doing anything such as being triggered by a sensor track?

The sensor works fine, I spoke with a retired Lionel repair tech (through a friend) and Lionel had the ability to mix and match TMCC with Legacy. When they repaired out of warranty trains should a part not be available they could make it work. This engine is one of them, the interesting part is the large flexi-trucks (EMD) with all six wheels with flanges.

No, I saw it. Didn’t know that was the point you were trying to make. Lionel has made several engines with flanges on all 6 wheels.

This model did not do it was done on the rebuild……TMCC/Legacy…….optical sensor and all flanges…..my thought>……….it runs fine shell paint/numbers repaired…….great price and funky history….typical Lionel engine….lmao

Apart from the obvious, the point is they are NOT supposed to have flanges on all wheel according to Lionel. You must have missed the statement about this engine.

Sorry about the short reply, I was doing three things at once and repairing for a friend his brand new Lionel vision line dead out of the box. Shorted radio antenna……so you received the smug answer.
