Lionel F3 #2544 sick horn

I replaced the volume pot on advice of a previous poster.  Although the volume output is now about double of what it was, it still does not give out a full blast every time.  At times it will sound like it is being muffled.  I can usually get it to go full blast by toggling the horn switch.  

I've tried it with various modern Lionel transformers with the same result.  I also bought a new speaker when I got the pot.  I was looking for some advice if it could possibly the speaker.  Once I toggle the horn button and it goes full blast and it will stay that way for as long as I keep the button pressed.  

I would appreciate any ideas or guidance in something else to check.

Did you replace the speaker? If not, do so. Seems like 90% of sound problems can be fixed by replacing the volume control or the speaker. If that doesn't fix your problem then you probably have a serious problem that may not be easy to fix.

I did ot replace the speaker.  Although I bought one I was hoping I didn't need it.  But based on what you say I will replace it and see if that does it.

Thank you for the tip.  I am leary of trying to replace parts unless I have to.  My fingers are just not as nimble as they used to be.
