They were delayed because Lionel saw the error of their ways and realized the indignity of making such a non - prototypical abomination out of the cab forward by painting it in that unnatural,  fantasy Daylight colors and are making last minute production changed by repainting them regular freight black; the way they were meant to be.  .

I heard it was because John had ordered so many for his and his friends layouts they had to double the order

Cat's outta the bag!  Actually I personally intercepted the shipment and they're currently being repainted in the correct paint schemes at a secret warehouse before they go to the dealers.  I didn't want to upset my friends after all.

Here is the real skinny concerning the shipment of Lionel's new Daylight SP Cab forwards.  I emailed Lionel to find out what is really going on and this is their reply:

After we found out that a Mr. John Korling was going to intercept a shipment of our very popular Legacy SP Daylight Cab Forward locomotives, we switched the contents to equal weight bricks.  We manufacture our trains for the fun an enjoyment of everyone and will not let one negative O gauge hobbyist ruin it for the rest.  Any further orders made by Mr. Korling of Lionel products will be filled with boxes of coal.

The Lionel Legacy SP Daylight Cab Forward locomotives will be shipping soon with guarded delivery to dealers.  I hope this answers your question Steve.

A top secret photo has been obtained showing a sample of the Daylight Cab Forward engines that have been successfully secured and will soon be ready for distribution to the many anxious fans who ordered them. As a special precaution against those who would attempt to repaint or otherwise alter the intended appearance, these models are reported to be impervious to unauthorized redecoration.

The model shown in the photo below is expected to be available at York to clearly demonstrate that all clandestine attempts to change it's appearance have been futile. Good news for all of us who ordered this beautiful engine. Bad news for those who think otherwise.

Well Played Mr. Korling but Lionel anticipated that you would anticipate such a move and actually put real engines in the boxes you thought were bricks.  LOL!  And what does this picture have to do with trains?  It is from Princess Bride co-starring Manny Patinkin, Lionel Train Enthusiast.

The gentleman picture thought he was clever by switching and re-switching cups of poison.  He got poisoned.

Let me fix the above quote for you a little bit:

I guess if the ATSF could have a REAL baby-blue Hudson, certain SP fans can have a

gaudy 4-8-8-2 if they'd like...me, I'm so austere that even my MTH GS-4 is the

Postwar, un-skirted black one.

Maybe, just maybe, there will be a few orphan Forward-Daylights that I can get one

next year, "cheap". (I have plenty of black paint.) But I doubt it.

Lionel tells us that the Daylight fantasy paint scheme far outsold the prototypical model. Your chances of getting one of the prototypical models would be probably much easier than the Daylights. In any event, don't look for any bargains here.

Actually, the builder did an oops and did them in the very rare SP Moonlight TTG scheme.  Lionel dithered because they thought they were rather interesting.  When Mr Knorling said, "We'll, at least that's not as bad as a Daylight Cab Forward" Lionel immediately told the builder to redo them and that is why they are late.

This original lettering scheme fits very well with the Daylight paint.

The others, if you prefer the billboard SP, have been done before and many wives are not thrilled on the $1,800 dollar repeat?

(Hopefully on the third run with whatever new system they fix the rubber tire issues!:-)

Meh.

The Daylight colors on the Cab Forward are pretty...  Pretty unprototypical.

I have a scale Daylight GS4 and the GGD cars to go along with it.   And I also have a non-Daylight colored Cab Forward that pulls it on occasion in addition to its regular freight duties, and guess what, they're both pretty AND prototypical!

"Nonsense, all it takes is a little paint and it's all fixed."

I guess you missed the special protection feature that is standard for the Daylight Cab Forward.

You have to love this new state-of-the-art technology.
