I have a Lionel fast track left -hand remote switch that operates fine, the green/red lantern light lights, but the lights on the remote never come on.

I had that and it was a surface mount resistor inside on the ckt board. Can you try a different remote to check if it's in the switch or the remote?

Thanks gave it a try its the circuit board the switch checked out ok.
That's happened a couple of times and been mentioned here, take a look inside the switch, you should see the defective part.
You might check the connection for the lights at the switch or an extension connection, if you have one. I think it is the yellow wire. Of course, if you used another controller with its own wire, That doesn't apply. I had the exact problem, and found I had missed the wire with the set screw on a euro terminal strip.
