I have Lionel's 1045 Flagman/Watchman and the arm will not raise. One wire to AC and one wire to Common on test transformer - same result with ZW. I wired this with a push button but same result.
Need to check with ohm meter to see if there is continuity through the coil. The little guy comes all apart and can be repaired. There were a lot of parts around for it. There is a steel weight on a wire crank that makes the arm move. It would be an interesting repair job.
Here are a few photos that show how the 1045 flagman comes apart. The flagman has to be removed from the base. Remove the two thumb nuts. Then remove the two hex nuts. Be very careful to keep track of the washers. The two studs have to be insulated from the frame, so the fiber washers need to go back into the same places to get this to insulate them. Now the flagman should be free from the base.
to separate the flagman into two pieces there is a screw in the base and one in the back of his head. When these are removed tye flagman body will separate into two halves. As I recall this is best done with his face down. Be very careful with the wires to the coil, they are very thin. To get tye glag man to work power has to go from the binding stud, thru tye coil, and back to tye other stud.
@David Johnston - WOW - what you just posted is more than I expected. THANK YOU so much for taking the time to take pictures, post them here, and then add VERY helpful comments.
