Nice story and thoughtful marketing strategy by Lionel. A grassroots strategy to get the public thinking about trains around Christmas trees and even though the B&B's involved might not be the types of places parents with youngsters might choose to stay at, perhaps older relatives such as grandparents or aunts and uncles will stay at such facilities and seeing trains running there might just inspire thought in their minds about buying a gift of trains for a youngster in their family.
Another worthwhile place for train manufacturers to donate trains to ignite a joy for trains might be nonprofit orphanages or similar facilities with kids and Christmas decorations where the children living there might not otherwise ever have the firsthand opportunity to experience toy trains during the holidays.
Wouldn't it be great if the other major toy train manufacturers did something similar? Considering the small amount of money it takes them to produce a basic RTR set, certainly Williams and MTH could each easily afford to give away toy trains to spark or rekindle or inspire the thought of trains and Christmas being intertwined. To me money well spent for the future of our hobby. Kuddos to Lionel's marketing derpartment!!! Thanks Jon for posting this
It doesn't get much better than that! Thanks to Lionel for that great marketing strategy.
We in the hobby for a long time too easily forget that for most the memories--and eventual involvement in many cases--were sparked by something as simple as a train running under the Christmas tree. Doesn't have to be anything elaborate or glitzy; just has to be something that creates a memory or brings a latent one back to the forefront.
Home Run!
Marty, grand slam no less! Thanks for the link Jon. These are the kind of memories we all have.
Happy Holiday to everyone.

Great idea!
The first time I ran a Lionel train was in a hotel.
Christmas day 2005. Hilton Walt Disney World. It was a present to our eldest son age 7 at the time. The hotel manager let us set it up on their lobby mezzanine.
We had loads of people wanting a go at running the train.

Jon thanks for sharing, that is what its all about!
A photogenic and well-spoken ambassador featured in a nicely produced piece. Hits all the right notes! Thanks for sharing.
That's a winner in my book. There might be other marketing possibilities Lionel has lined up that we don't know about. Win, win for Lionel and O gauge trains.
