Would anyone know why my Lionel UP #1977 GP20 randomly sounds its horn when operating? I just spent a lot of time cleaning the wheels and pick up rollers, but it is still doing it.
Transient Voltage Spikes often have a DC component, so it will happen randomly. Now that you have spent a lot of time cleaning the wheels and pick up rollers, time to move on to the track.
I was thinking it had something to do with the track. This occurred on my Christmas tree layout, and not on my regular layout. I am using a CW-80 transformer.
It will be more pronounced with a CW-80. As viewed with a scope, the CW is putting out nearly 18 volts all of the time, just for shorter periods for speed control and DC offset generation. This will make for more frequent transient spikes with DC offsets in excess of 1.5 volts, triggering the horn.
