I was going through the latest Lionel catalog and stopped at the H10 offerings. We have already beat to death that these are H9s, so I won't go into that. Being bored due to medical limited duty, I thought I'd do a check of Lionel's cab numbers for these engines to see if they were rebuilt H8/9s or new built H10s.
As mentioned by forum member N&W in an earlier post, it turns out that three of the PRR cab numbers in the catalog belonged to H9s, not H10s. They are #1288, #7109, and #3529.
#1288 was initially a H8sb upgraded to H9s in 1922. #7109 was initially a H8sc upgraded to H9sa in 1915. #3529 was a H9s. All these engines finished their careers as H9s.
I'm now reconsidering buying #1288 and calling it what it is; a H9. Since it started out as a H8sb, the low side tender is probably correct for it. Before I decide to buy it, though, I need to see if I can find a foot board pilot that can be added to it. Forum member PRRHORSESHOECURVE recommended Precision Scale Co but none of their pilots looked right. Does anyone know of another source?
I'll also see what I can find at York.
