I like smoke lifters esp. ones that you can add or take off. Any change the 3985 could be fitted with smoke lifters or a aftermarket kit? Thanks Bruce

Noooo...please not from the factory....or at least not installed. Thats my biggest beef with my vision challenger, they are unremovable without removing parts in the way.
What are smoke lifters? Do you mean Elephant Ears? Lionel is making this engine to steam program specs. I would not think that they would add these when 3985 doesn’t have these unless it was masquerading as 3967.
Hey, I had posted here on this topic a few weeks back and then asked Lionel. They said only those pictured in the catalogue with elephant ears will have them.
Seeing that Lionel is making some with the smoke lifters, order a set from the parts dept. when the parts become available and add them to your engine. As far as being correct for that engine number, who cares it's your engine.

Elephant ears?
Smoke lifters, smoke deflectors, yes.
You folks should be aware that the Union Pacific RR referred to them as "Wind Wings", and generally only the FEF-2/FEF-3 4-8-4s, plus the oil burning Challengers, carried them. The 3985 did not have "Wind Wings" when she was in regular service as a coal burner, nor after she was converted to oil burning. As mentioned above, 3985 was re-numbered (3967?) for a special excursion, and the "Wind Wings" were installed. After that one-time operation, the "Wind Wings" were quickly removed, as they seriously affected forward visibility for the Engineer and Fireman, not to mention the Pilot Crew members.
