Well, now. That's a good-looking steamer. I am pleased to see that he weathered the boiler in such a way that he has mineral deposits running down under the steam dome and pop valves, as they should, but not under the sand domes, as they shouldn't, of course. This sand dome error is a mistake I see occasionally on steam weathering jobs.

The Santa Fe, like most largely desert railroads, was stuck with hard water, and hard water leaves a lot of deposits (not to mention its tendency to plug up water and steam passages over time), even with water softeners added to the tenders.
