I have a Lionel 258 and Ives 257 that the fiber intermediate gear is stripped making the motor lock. In Greenberg's new O Gauge Vol. 1 it is described as a type 8 motor. In the book it shows a type 7 motor with steel intermediate gears. Where and how would these be replaced? Thanks, Dan

Just a a thought perhaps call Jeff Kane at -TT Tender or another good parts supplier and mention your gear it also looks like the fiber gears used in the Prewar Lionel engines 250/251/252/253/254 series motors but not positive its the same.
The part number is SLS 11. Type 7 motor Original gears are hard to get in good condition, if the teeth aren't worn then usually the center is or the stud that holds them is sometimes loose. New replacement steel/brass gears are available but can sometimes chatter. You'll have to pull the wheels so may as well do full maintenance while the motor is apart.

Thanks, DIESELER, John, RoyBoy. I see on Hennings sight they're available. Do they just slide off the stud after the wheels are pulled? I have wheel pullers and a press with cups to re-install the wheels. The pinion gear looks good. Thanks again, Dan
Yes, they slide right off. You can sneak them in without pulling the wheels completely but that's a judgement call on your part.
John, Sounds good. Maybe I can find the gears this weekend at Allentown's Spring Thaw.
