Why would you buy the last issue of the  big boy that has the wrong whistle, no smoke effects, etc. for almost the cost of the new big boy.

I absolutely agree, David.

I guess, people will ultimately ask whatever they want to for their item.  I've been tracking those big boys for a while now (on ebay), its the same auctions over and over. They are obviously not going, so if I were the seller, I'd start to think about lowering the prices to a more reasonable cost.  Regardless of the whistle issue, they are fantastic engines.

Not to hi-jack the thread but while on topic of ebay pricing I was watching a UP boyscouts ES44AC die-cast diesel last week, that went for 1700+.  Incredible.

Why would anone pay such prices?

That is a very good question and why this mini trend is so interesting.

Most of these ebay offerings are mint and that makes a positive difference to collectors.

In my particular case , the buyer paid the 1900 price and then thanked me profusely for selling the engine to him. Of course, this was just one particular case.

I myself was going to buy the legacy big boy but after following them on several sites and seeing what sellers were trying to sell them for I decided to order the vision line big boy.

F30Msport,

i saw saw that same auction or one like it. Just like Lionel's Eco engine the prices will drop After guys were trying to sell them for up to $2500.00. Still not cheap enough for me as I have seen one for $1325.00 but my time will come.

I suspect they will remain very close to the same price hoping an uneducated drive by will snatch it up only to discover its not a VL BB. This happens with every new release of legacy engines.  The EM-1's were the same way. Right before the Legacy release the TMCC versions were all over eBay for 1200+

I have also been following the BB auctions, and the FS on this forum, for a year or more.

I attempted to purchase a JLC BB from a forum member last year, and he raised the price by $25 after I committed to purchase it. I agreed to the new price, and sent a cashiers check. He then emailed the next day and asked that I send another $250. I told him to return the check.

Some people have no integrity!

It's foolish to pay that kind of money for the Legacy version....just wait 11 months and you'll get the same model with more features!

You nailed that one!

The second item I bought off this site came from a gentleman who owned a train store.  He said, "One thing I learned from this hobby; there will always be another train like you want in the future".  Those words have stuck with me.

yes, emotions do play a big part in the buying and selling of trains and can be detrimental.

This Lionel vision line promotion for the Big Boy has been calculated to work the emotions probably in preparation for a stiff sale price--we'll soon see.

it is also true generally that you can always find the piece you want. But at what price/condition?

I hope these buyers are collectors because if they are operators paying these prices they might be in for a surprise. Of the 4 members in our club who bought these when they first came out, all had to be returned to Lionel for repair. Two members had to send theirs back twice. This engine has poor service rate. Now they are out of warranty. Ignorance or poor memories could be costly.

Has Anyone thought about the First Legacy Big Boy, 4 Offerred, PLUS A FREE CAB 2 SYSTEM.....WOW....I LOVE MINE AND $2,000.00 Won't Buy It....I just want to say this, the price one pays for a Want, depends on Supply and Demand....The Demand is higher now that our Layouts have Wider Diameter Curves...Also, 3 Scale Rail is BIG BUSINESS..

NOW, GO RUN YOUR TRAINS.....

You can say that again! The Big Boy craze is on.The older ones are going up in price now. Some cant swallow the price of the Vision Line,so they go for the older ones for less money.Originally Posted by leapinlarry:

IT'S A CONSPIRACY! Ya think?

Bottom line I'm older than most, but not nearly as old a some here on this forum, or anywhere else! If you are a "Blue Collar Guy" like I am my self and you want it then get it. I was raised by people of the 20's-60's. that wouldm't walk across the street and pay 7cents to watch a ****ant eat a bale of hay. Remember most of you guys have raised educated some kids and maybe a wife or 2. Myself I raised and college educated my wife and 4 kids. So for most of us a d*a*m*n good TV is the main source of entertainment! There are a few that have the luxery of "rat holeing" some overtime/garage/shop sale monies for our hobbies. So in essence, "if you want it go for it". I fighting bad health, and ain't got a helluva lot longer, so once again guys go for it. If your wife or loved ones git P*ss*ed they will get over it!!, Have Fun Brandy!

I agree with you.

I love Union Pacific steam, but after buying 2 different UP Vision Line Challengers and a future VL BB, I hope Lionel changes gears with new offerings and road names.

I realize there is much more involved-costs for them, new designs, etc.  Would be cool to see something not done in the past 15 yrs.

Never thought I would be saying we are tired of Challengers, Big Boys, and other incredible engines!  This is a great problem to have! Back in the 70/80s we could have never predicted the future of this!

I agree and share your sentiments on this. I'm in the same boat, health wise, and nowadays if I see something that I want for sale, I buy it if I can afford it.
