A Question to those who recently purchased a new Legacy Crane and Caboose. I received mine today and although everything appeared New I had concerns. No lock pins holding the cab to frame. Is this common for brand new item? Plus the eye hook that holds the lock pin was broken and loose in the box. I read where people struggled with opening doors for the gears or program/run switch. When I removed mine from the box, all those doors were already open. Common? To top it off, the crane did not operate after programming.

Do you have a picture? I have 3 of the TMCC Crane and Boom Car sets, but I am drawing a blank on what you mean by “lock pins holding the cab to the frame.” Or “the eye hook that holds the lock pin”. Maybe there are differences other than electronics between the TMCC and Legacy versions?
As for the doors, I don’t have any issues opening or closing any of them.
The 2 small lock pins should be in a separate small bag. They slide in the at the back of the cab/frame to keep boom centered while underway on track.
I haven't looked for the pins you mention, although I remember my friend's crane did have them included in the box and the directions mention them. I'll take a look when I have a chance.
Edit: I took a look and the pins are not present in the box for my crane. They may have fallen out when I initially opened it at the train show I purchased it at to run on the club layout, but I'm doubting they were ever there.
As for operational issues, mine works great (knock on wood) except for the common problem of the outriggers being difficult to keep retracted when not in use. Doors are a bit tricky to open, but no worse than I'd expect. My friend's crane did have some operational issues from the start. When trying to raise or lower the hook, the whole cab tries to turn. Likely a string is wound around something inside causing it to grab.
If you're operating it under Legacy control, is it programmed as a crane in the equipment type menu? I also mistakenly programmed mine and forgot to put the switch back into run mode. Needless to say it didn't work until I noticed that.
I took a look at mine again this morning and I now see what pins you are referring to.
Rats. I have the MOW crane and don't remember the pins anywhere. I'll look in the box, etc.

Yes. Programming it as a "crane" gives you the appropriate " crane related" icons on the keypad.
Hey FWIW.....if I remember correctly, the outriggers need to be pushed back in "gently by hand" after use.....and I think you need to hear a faint click that means they are "reset"! It's been awhile since I've used mine, but I had all of the same issues. Compared to some engine problems talked about on the Forum, the Crane/Boom cars are comparatively, a walk in the park. An awesome play value item!!!
Can't find the pins and can't find the pins on Lionel parts...can't find the crane actually. Anybody find the latest crane and boom cars on the replacement parts in Lionel? Kind of annoying that it takes years to get something into parts. I kind of see why Vision stuff takes the warranty period although that is somewhat annoying as well when one tends to fix things themselves to avoid further damage from shipping.
On my SP model, the boom car is in the Lionel data base, but not the “more important” crane car. Not sure why that is but... of course the pins would be on that page. I remember I got them with my crane but no idea where they are now, and I promptly broke one eyelet putting them in.

Maybe I’ll make some out of stiff rubber 😀
I found the cranes if you just put"crane" in Lionel parts search bar.
Here is the part number for pins.

Found my pins and one eyelet. Let me tell ya, they are so fiddly I’m not going to use them. But, YMMV

Looks like a tiny Allan wrench or just bend a wire would work...
