I couldn't resist the deal on this from Charles Ro, per an earlier post on this forum.

So it arrived Saturday. Very fast shipping!

First, the box was big and heavy; my wife commented about having to carry it in. I wasn't home at the time.

The thing is big, about 32" overall length.

I am no expert on the prototype, but the level of detail is very nice.

I was surprised that the tender sides are completely smooth, with no rivet detail at all.

I really like the volume control wheel hidden under the water fill hatch. Fully accessible from the top.

The two smoke unit switches as well as the run/program switch, and the odyssey switches are all located under the rear sand dome cover. Also easily accessible.

The fluid fill port for the whistle smoke unit is located under the other sand dome cover. The covers are secured by tiny magnets, and are easy to remove for access.

I don't run Legacy, but under TMCC the engine runs great. Good low speed, and nice sound.

Everything seems to work perfectly, just like it should.

I haven't tried the smoke units yet. That will be next.

Oh, and it's 4 chuffs per rev as well.

Love it so far.

Rod

Hi, I purchased the latest B&O EM-1 some months ago from the Electric Train Outlet in St. Louis and yes it is a beautiful locomotive and a great performer.  Here is a video I did awhile back which has a segment showing my EM-1 emerging from a tunnel with a coal drag.  The EM-1 segment starts at about minute 2:38.  As you will see, it is a great smoker!  Bo

Isn't that always the way it works?

Great deal... one of the best Charles Ro super sales... I don't think there's a better bang for your $$$ as long as you have the real estate for these "giants".  I have the DM&IR from earlier last year, and a Northern Pacific on its way from Charlie now.

Enjoy!!!

I always wanted a Yellowstone and really love mine.   I run it conventional only and it is spectacular.  It was perfect out of the box and is still perfect today. But seldom run it because of the extreme boiler stick out: the front of the boiler sticks out on 72" inch and even 84" curves (biggest I have) and it looks silly to me.   But its a lovely loco.

Last week (Sun 2/3) I ordered a WP EM1 from Charles Ro online. Received an order confirmation right away. By Thursday I had heard nothing so I called and was informed that they were gone.

A friend on the Forum notified me last night that Charles Ro had the NP 'Giant' listed again in their sale so I quickly placed another order for one. They again sent me an order confirmation. I called this mornig to check and talked to 'Mike' who said to best call back this afternoon to check the status. He thought they might have come across a few more as they were doing inventory all last week.

I called and again spoke to 'Rita' who informed me that the listing was a mistake and they had none.

I'm not sure how much more of this abuse I can take....

I opened both of mine up (B&O versions) just this weekend,I have been away from home for seven months.Beautiful engines. I've got one on the outside 0-84 loop with a string of Atlas rolling stock. These EM-1's were the buy of the Century(So far).

Sam,Barry's Train Shop in Elizabethtown,PA. may still have some in inventory. He had better prices than Ro on them.

Thanks to all for the great comments.

I especially liked the video clips.

These have probably the best Lionel smoke units I have seen so far. Great smoke.

The level of add on piping and detail pieces is amazing.

There is also a nice amount of cab and backhead detailing, including painted valve handles and gauge faces.

I would say Lionel did a great job of rendering this model.

Hey, and everything works, right out of the box.

Sam, I am sorry to hear that your order somehow got messed up.

I agree, that's a lot of on again/off again to have to endure.

Did you try Barry's as Boomer suggested??

I recently purchased one of these because of the discounted prices.  I'm new to the hobby and bought the B&O EM-1 and Legacy Control System at the same time.  Unfortunately, since I'm new to this I don't have a great layout to run it on.  I only have 80'' of straight track but still have a blast running it forward and backward.  We plan on moving in the next year or two and the house we purchase will have room for a permanent layout.
