Classic indication of a failure of the tach sensor circuitry.  First step is to check for a broken wire as the sensor mounted on the swiveling motor sometimes breaks a wire after a few years.  If it's not simply a broken wire or loose connection, my top suspect is, unfortunately, the DCDS motor control board.  I've had a couple of bad motor sensors, but most often the DCDS has taken a powder.
