I read the 2012 catalogue description for this set (that is just now delivering) and it doesn't mention whistle steam.  They weren't offering it in abundance that year. But with this feature being reintroduced to a host of Lionel Legacy engines since then, I was wondering if anyone knows if these engines got delivered with this upgrade and come with whistle steam?

Also - the passenger cars are extruded aluminum. I have zero experience with anything other than plastic passenger cars (only in the hobby a few years and the Lionel Southern Crescent set and my MTH Premier cars are all plastic). Can anyone describe what the differences are and the pros and cons between aluminum and plastic?  Seems like people were upset that the ESE set will have plastic so I'd really like to understand the differences between plastic and aluminum cars. And, I won't have the opportunity to see the set in real life in order to decide on whether to buy it.

thanks for your comments.

No whistle steam for the 2012 J,

The aluminum cars vs. plastic is going to be a tough comparision because the new cars are not out yet.

I like the 18 aluminum cars. They have beautiful trucks, great paint, and nice interior details.

The only draw back on the aluminum cars are they are 18 inchers and the google glass on the side of the cars. That is the glass looks like its glued on the wrong side of the car.

I was hoping for an apples-to-apples on aluminum versus plastic cars.  Meaning, putting the whole 18" versus 21" car debate aside, what are the differences between Lionel's Legacy level 18" aluminum and plastic cars - was the question.  Does anyone have the new Pocahontas set to chime in with details and maybe some photos?

Too bad it doesn't have whistle steam.  I have the MTH Powhatan set and auxiliary tender and full vista car.  Barely run.  But was thinking of selling it off to replace with the Lionel Legacy version.  Whistle steam would have sweetened the pot.
