My layout is for all intents and purposes, a very long run of track. It takes about 10 minutes to run the entire length of main line out to the end and back. Each end has a reverse loop. Is it possible to have two Legacy hand helds so two trains can be run simultaneously at different spots on the layout?

Yes.
You should be able to run both trains with one handheld.
I have been known to run three and even four trains with one remote. You just need fast fingers!
What John said, as long as you know where they all are🤣
if you’re running a train, it will maintain speed and direction until you stop it. Therefore you can call up and run as many as your brain can manage. As always, the human brain limits the use of technology. I can’t effectively manage more than three, even on my 1800 sq ft railroad (single track main, point to point, three 20-car passing sidings). Perhaps more could be run with loops, but that’s not what my operations driven layout design will do.

What a great Question, yes, you can run more than 1 train with the cab 2, Cab 1L remotes, however there is a difference in controlling TMCC engines, and Legacy engines. Just keep your mind on what’s going on. Have fun. Happy Railroading Everyone

And a slower speed, with no talking. Otherwise poof the faster one always find the slow one quickly
If you have newer engines with Bluetooth control, you can also use a phone or an iPad if you prefer to have multiple handheld devices, one for each engine. If you do use the single Legacy controller for multiple engines, remember there’s an emergency stop button which will bring everything to a halt. Very handy. Don’t ask me how I know. 😝
