Does anyone know what Lionel's source was for these sound sets? I know Warner Brothers recorded the actual PM 1225 for the movie but am wondering what Lionel used. I'm especially interested in where they got the sound effect for the whistle. Thanks!

Hi, well, I have the legacy Polar Express tender also, and in Lionels discription for it, it says that all of the sounds on both tenders were digitally recorded from the actual Pere Marquette 1225 berkshire steam locomotive. Im not too sure about what kind of whistle it has though, but I do know that I love its sound. If youre a railfan, and know what Im talking about, to me, it sounds like 5 chime steam whistle of some sort. Im not sure if its the one used in the movie, though, but it sure does sound pretty close to me!
All of the sounds were recorded from the real Pere Marquette #1225...including the whistle. The Steam Railroading Institute has installed borrowed whistles from time to time, but the one Lionel recorded is the original one the PM used on their Berkshires.
Heres the real PM good video of the "idle sounds", bell and start of chuff. I believe the added bonus with the PM is that even the actual chuff come directly from the actual loco. You can even here the noise from the cable actuating the bell. The legacy berk may be the only legacy loco with every sound taken directly from the prototype, i.e. the legacy NKP berk actual has the PM swinging bell
sounds as opposed to the NKPs actual clapper bell sound.
At about 2:25 the whistle is quite similar to Lionels "recording".
If I ever ( God forbid) am forced to downsize, the PE berk would be the last to go
Yes the sounds were recorded from the 1225 at the Steam Railroading Institute. We fired her up and they spent the entire day recording different sounds. I was the engine operator and Diane Francis was the fireperson. So I guess I'm the little guy in the cab. Yes the whistle is the her own. We have had "guest" whistles from time to time but we never take the correct whistle off. We use them both at an event since either one can be blown.
