My new Allegheny makes all the groaning and clanking noises while running. As far as I know all my other Lionel Legacy units only do this at idle and maybe very slow speeds. Is this a new change to Legacy or something that needs to be corrected?

One of my legacy berks does this as well. It's one of of the earlier run of legacy Berkshires

No It was the new BTO received the day before thanksgiving.
The newer Legacy has more background sounds, my Vision Line Big Boy sounds like a bucket of bolts running slowly by, lots of extra noises.

I wonder what the thinking behind such "background" sounds/noise is? Have the folks at Lionel involved with their sound packages ever actually heard a steam locomotive at slow speed?
Who knows, you'd probably have to ask someone like Rudy who is one of their sound experts. I doubt anyone here can answer that question for Lionel employees.

Same here but at ANY speed.
Yep, just more noticeable at low speeds when there isn't a lot of running noise.
Having moved quite a few large steam locomotives, live and towed, through tight yard trackage. I can tell you it is a bit hairy sometimes; watching wheel flanges crawl up the inside of the head of the rail with loud creaking moans and then dropping back into the gauge with an accompanying "CRACK" and then doing over and over again through the curve. Even on tangent track, the longer steamers make quite a racket at slow speeds. I think my Legacy engines are pretty good at mimicking the sounds. It sure adds to the fun of playing with trains. My "rivet-counter" grandson insists on running at slow speeds just for the drama of the thing.
You gotta' love it.
