Here is my version of the differences of both these gems.  The Lionel Legacy vs MTH R&N Pacifics.  I like them both but you decide which one you like better.  Love those whistles!!!

Sorry for the poor quality of the video, need to get a new camera or better lighting, hope you enjoy.

Nice review, Laz, much appreciated from a fellow Reading fan.

fwiw: I also have not figured out the MTH quillable whistle while the engine is moving. It's awkward.

One thing that is apparent when viewing both models head-on is the size discrepancy - are they both made to 1:48 scale or are they based on different Pacific types?

Hi PAUL,

I didn't measure the drivers, but it does look to me that the Lionels ones are just slightly bigger.  I'll take a measurement later.  Thanks for the comment.

I would have to give the edge in sound to Lionel. Deeper and fuller somehow, the fatboy speakers are just better IMO. But I like the MTH details a little better, and the darker blue just looks more realistic, at least to my eye. The whistle smoke on the Lionel is always a nice feature, at least when it works. From the front, and also in overall length, the Lionel is noticeably bigger, so that begs the question; which one is closer to scale size? Will they both negotiate tighter curves, like 042 or 031?

Thanks for the video, Rod

What a great comparison!

Looks like mth 20-3760-1 and Lionel 6-85172.

Interestingly mth had in 2017 made a similar model with the lighter paint scheme.

If I identified the models right the Lionel msrp is 1399.99 and the mth is 1099.95.  Lionel says its model will do 036 but I am not sure I believe that, and mth says O42.

I would also have to give it to Lionel on the whistle, it sounds like what I remember. The mth unit just looks better to me though.

Both are fantastic.
