I once owned an original light gray 318 with a large single reduction drive gear. It also had the combination couplers which had the loop for the earlier hook couplers. And the wheels were the solid steel type without tires.
Lt Grey 318 was 1926, small gear super motors were being installed. The dark grey 318 was 1924-1925, and had large gear super motors. Both would have had die cast wheel/steel tire drivers installed at the factory. By 1924, Lionel had completely moved away from cast iron wheels to die cast wheels for their driving wheels.
I thought mine had those steel drivers, but it was back in 1976 and my memory is fuzzy! LOL! I am sure about the large single reduction gearing and the combination loop and latch couplers. This loco pulled a 100 series freight set (cattle, box, ballast and caboose) and had its original set box. Upon reflection, my 318 might have been dark gray!
