My enthusiasm for this set is still sky-high after yesterday. Especially after Lionel teased us by mentioning it in the 2016 Volume 1 catalog a year ago. It’s a genuine nod to PW unlike some of the less than stellar “PW-inspired” items in the last several catalogs.

Had a chance last night to go through the catalog in more detail and noticed that the write up next to the set (see page 88) says the FA diesels, “…were contemplated but never produced.” Made me wonder if anyone knows more about this. Am guessing it was early 1950s as this set is basically the same as the UP Anniversary Set with AA diesels and the three 2400 series passenger cars. Would be interesting to know how far this got into the production process. Just a discussion with drawings or did it get the go-ahead and was then pulled back? Inquiring minds.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing this in the flesh later this year (hopefully  ).

It is a nice set indeed. I have the Anniversary Conventional Classics set from a few years ago that featured the yellow FA's and trio of passenger cars. Also a great looking and great running set.

I was hoping to see a PRR Turbine offered with the three green streamliners but..maybe a future catalog.

All of our Conventional Classics items have been rock solid.

The cars in this set will be the perfect complement to the Lionel 6-16027, 6-16028, 6-16029, & 6-16030 Great Lakes Express Passenger Cars offered in the Service Station Set. I like the fact that they are going to package the set in "Postwar Inspired Packaging"........ this is probably the closest we will come to the return of the Conventional Classics Sets.

At lot has been written about the Lionel archives and such. I do not recall seeing any mention of these Alcos being considered. I suspect the comment about them being "contemplated but never produced" is more marketing than fact.

Regardless, it is an attractive set, and will probably sell out.

if you noticed - no more Pullmor motor.  It has dual cans instead. hope they are not truck mounted ones.

The lack of a Pullmor was a disappointment for me. Quite a downgrade in quality and to  the ultimate experience of running it. Lionel has been hellbent on can motoring everything lately, to cut their costs. I'm hoping I can remove the can motor(s)  and retrofit a Pullmor and ACMC reverse unit.

They will probably have the same vertical motors as the other LC+ FA-Alcos but without the LC+ features.  I was a bit surprised this wasn't a  LC+ engine but it makes it more Postwar type.  I agree that it will sell out.

Just in case you (or others) haven't seen it Lionel is offering Lion Chief Plus FAs in the LC section of the catalog. This is a new addition to the LC+ line. Being offered in B&O, UP, and I think NH liveries.

This probably was an idea that came only to a mock up stage and might be sitting in the Lionel Archives somewhere...but it's not a 100% sure thing. I've seen quite a few mock ups and prototypes thanks to TM of ideas that never made it to production.

Regardless, this looks like a cute and attractive set that screams old fashioned Lionel goodness. I personally don't mind it has can motors - I actually prefer them in the long run. No maintenance, no brush changing, and no stalling out. Plus, at least we get the high quality shell and die cast frame and trucks as the classic quality postwar version.

As I mentioned in other threads, the description for the cars lists the name of the 2401 Observation as Irvine instead of Hillside. Wonder how they came up with that typo?

I will be ordering this set as well to go with my original 2400 series cars plus the 1990 Great Lakes Express set. If anything, this set will look good under the tree in December since the green gives it that "Christmas" look. Nice companion to the mostly red North Pole Central cars of a few years ago.

I think street prices are around $440, not sure how much cheaper it will go.

Should have a Pullmor, magnetraction, a mechanical 3 position e-unit, and part for part compatible with the original PW Alcos.

Maybe you could buy the set and a pair of real PW engines and swap shells?

That sounds like a feasible solution if the new shells attach the same as the PW versions. I doubt we will ever see a PW version from Lionel ever again.

I wonder if they will make extra cars to add to the sets.

I had the same thought yesterday. When Lionel did the Anniversary Set for the Conventional Classics line they offered two add-on 2400 series cars. I didn't buy them when they were released and had sort of forgotten about them. Just happened to see some on eBay the other day and the seller was asking crazy money for them.
