I'd like to get some opinions from those out there who may already own these locomotives so I can compare the two. Because of a gift certificate issue, I'm stuck buying something from a very limited selection. I can a Lionel Santa Fe GP7 only, or a Lionel RS3 set for about $40.00 more money. The set would include Fastrack, transformer, AND three passenger cars. What is it about the GP that might make it "worth" so much more than the RS3? Are there better sounds or more options? There's also an 0-8-0 steamer with three passenger cars set as another option for the same cost as the RS3. Wasn't there an issue with the RS3 where they were recalled to China?

If you're talking about the Lionchief Plus GP7 it is considered to be above the starter set diesels.  It has vertical can motors with fly wheels, smoke, cruise control and sounds.  The sounds are reported to be good not great.  It also can be controlled with the transformer or the included remote.  Detail is good not great.

The starter set is a good value if you can use the track and transformer.  The diesel will probably have small horizontal can motors in the trucks.  Sounds could be included or could be just a horn.  If it is a Lionchief set it will only work with the included remote.

I have a Lionchief Plus Mikado and really like it.  Some don't like that each engine requires it's own remote.
