Hi marc, I have the set. It is nice but could use more power as it doesn't handle changes in grade well. It really doesn't do well with add on cars. Nice set but needed more power. Hope this helps. Lenny
I have tis set as well and have the two car add on and I agree it needs more power. Could use one more motor and make it a two motor train. That would be nice.

The set is very underpowered. Nice set but prone to melted gearbox or gears. Funny but Metro North set didn't have these problems.
I bought this set for my son and my Lionel service station had to elongate the wires to the trucks to stop it from continual derailments. I then bought the add-on 2 pack and experienced the same power problems as the other. It is a very nice set just way underpowered. I run my on a flat elevated figure eight loop so it does ok but if you have any grade I think you will have issues.
I would love to add a second powered truck...has anyone here had any success with that?

I too bought the set. I bought one of the first original 1000. The doors get stuck very easily. The gears just grind loud no matter how much grease is on them. The horn is the worse part, I am sure if you are looking for this set you have at least seen a m-7 in person you know what horn is like and there completely different. I remember when Lionel boxed the sets they put the Metro-North Stations on the stickers which are optional to put on posts that come with the set. The bottom line is its a $200 set sellng for $329
