According to Harold E Cox's THE BIRNEY CAR, which is available online, the lengths over bumpers varied from about 27' 9" to 30' and the width from 7' 6" to 8' 4".  The Corgi is spot on for 1/48, but the Lionel is too wide (probably a hangover from having to fit the old motor in).  I have a fairly recent post in the Subways/Transit forum comparing the Corgi, Lionel, and Bowser versions.  IMHO, the best in terms of scale and detail is the Corgi, which is easy and pretty inexpensive to motorize with a Lionel/K-Line/Williams handcar drive, if you don't need the bump action.

Thanks, Bruce, your post was very helpful.  I wasn't even aware of the subway/transit forum before.  It's pretty interesting and full of useful information.
