It has to be driven off the spur gear. Obviously pressing is the preferred method, but it can be tapped off with a punch and a hammer…..be sure the punch is SMALLER than the end splined shaft. I use a piece of brass to start the movement, thus reducing the chance of marring or mushrooming the end of the shaft. Once it gets moving, I’ll switch to a punch, usually when the shaft gets to the flush point with the gear. Install in reverse order. The shaft has a positive stop, so you can’t over push it. I have a an old dead truck I use to bolt the motor down on and chuck that up in my vise ….helps keep my workpiece stationary and prevents shifting around while performing the operation……BMORAN4 is one of the top postwar gurus on here, and perhaps he’ll share his expertise as well,…
