We bought two of these sets when they came out approximately three years ago. We love the weight of the aluminum cars - this is our only set with aluminum cars and they are special. We've run one of these sets a ton and the other is NIB. Given we don't use the NIB set ever and want to buy some new goodies from the Lionel 2018 vol. 2 catalogue, I was thinking about maybe selling the NIB set. I'm wondering if I should, or instead hold on to it, as I don't see many (any) new sets with aluminum car sets? I haven't been in the hobby long enoug to appreciate if this is a special set or no biggie to sell off. Thanks for any advice.

I doubt anyone will be making new aluminum passenger cars at this point. Manufactures have gone to plastic cars for more detail and cheaper construction costs. The later detailed aluminum cars with interiors (yours and the K-Line cars) are harder to find as they were produced in smaller quantities. So if you really like the set I would hang onto them. On the other hand since you have two sets sell the one you don't use. Why keep it if you're not going to use it?
Another option, either overlook the matching numbers or have the cars from your unused set renumbered and run them together for a longer train.
Life is short, my experience votes for sell, get what you want and enjoy. It is like the stock market as the famous expression goes:
buy a stock and wait for it to go up. If it does not go up, don't buy it!
If you're not running them sell them
Thanks everyone. I think I'll take a long hard and look at the set and see if I can part with it. I also scanned ebay and there's a used set for sale at $2,050. Any thoughts on what a reasonable price might be for a new set? Obviously catalogue is a non-starter, as I got my set for a small discount and there's no warranty coverage any more. Thanks for any insight.
