Hey guys how's it goin'!?
I got a quick question for ya'll.
I just recently purchased a Lionel no.182 Magnet Crane from a fellow OGR'r.
It runs and I have been tinkering with it, but its pretty loud and after using it for a few minutes it gives off that old Lionel motor smell. Any tips on maintenance I can try? I gave it some Lionel lubricant on its gears and it runs a little smoother.
any tips/experience is appreciated!

I don't have a 182, but do have a 165 Magnetic Crane (my favorite Lionel operating accessory). They are pretty noisy, new or used. For maintenance, I use a little white lithium type lube on the gears.

I believe that was a feature! 
The old Lionel smell is usually ozone from sparking brushes on the open motors. Ozone or O3, is the that sweet smell we love about Lionel and other trains at Christmas. I had an open motor as part of a Pre- WWII Erector Set that really was good at sparking and smelling sweet.

Please don't laugh to much here with this answer,,,,,,,,,,but I put mine on a piece of indoor-outdoor carpet, and that helped quite a lot. I love smell of the motor, so no problem here, thats free with this machine.

That's actually a clever idea. did you put ground cover over the carpet to hide the fact that it was carpet?
no reason to laugh. lots of guys put their trains on carpet to quiet them down.
When I had my original Lionel postwar 182 out, I ran it on DC.
I had a toggle switch set up to choose AC or DC.
Once in a while, I'd use AC to demagnetize the electromagnet.
