The catalog shows minimum curve of 054 but i have questions:

1. Previous Lionel ES44's had minimum of 042 listed but 054 recommended.  The hybrids from a few years ago show 054 as minimum.  Why the differences?  Has anyone attempted to run one on 042?

2. The ES44's are 19" long.  The scale SD80's are 19.5" and require 036.  The DD35's are 22" and show 042 minimum but 054 recommended.  Is there something with the ES44's that make them require larger radius?  Something with the pilot?

I really want the Conrail ES44 but my outer loop is half 042 and half 054.

NJOGauge,

We recommend O54 due to the pilot on the ES44. The pilot "look" like they are fixed,, but actually pivot with a return spring that centers the pilot. The coupler itself pivots too. When running an ES44AC around O42 the coupler is stretched to its limits and will derail a car without a pivoting coupler, such as a 9950 die cast sprung truck. O54 curves relaxes these limitations, hence we "recommend" O54 curves, but the loco will actually ride around a O42 curve. That is what the catalog is trying to convey, with a lot less words.

Thanks,

Mike
