I am rebuilding a 602 Seaboard NW2 switcher, an engine my dad bought new for me many years ago. After cleaning, it is easy to see that the idler gears are extremely wobbly (approx. 20-30 degree tilt at times) and the teeth on one gear are worn to sharp edges while the teeth on the other are well rounded. All other gears all look reasonable. To replace the idler gears, I have the motor disassembled down to the rectangular aluminum frame, so access to the wheels is wide open. I do not have a wheel puller or any kind of press, other than a vise. I saw a wheel puller set on ebay for close to $200, but I can’t/don’t want to afford that. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to pull the two gear side wheels without causing damage? Then a suggestion on reassembly? BTW, both axles have magne-traction

Thanks ADCX ROB and C W BURFLE! I decided to go with Frank Timko's solution, and will let you know how my adventures went!

With regard to wear on the studs, it's difficult to tell without having the gears off yet, but from what I can see, the studs appear to be ok, just the inside of the idler gears has really been wallowed out. When I rotate the drive gear by hand, I get a binding spot almost every time at exactly one revolution (of the drive wheels). A quick and small back and forth motion clears the binding, so there may be other wear issues I can't see yet - the gears seem to be clean enough, but the idler gears sure can get sideways in a hurry!
