I guess I drew a lucky straw on this, as I ordered the PB&NE #27 the other day.  I'm very pleased with my NW2.  It's a super-smooth runner, great Railsounds, and a good smoker too.  No broken trucks on my unit (thankfully).  I just hope Lionel fixes the problems other folks are encountering.  It's a sweet diesel switcher for anybody looking to do some serious switching operations.

Hi Surefire,

It's disappointing that people are receiving their NW2 with the detached trucks. We're currently investigating why this is happening. I'm thinking it may be a problem with the packaging design.

As always, please give us a call so we can fix yours. I'll make sure Service knows to put in some kind of extra padding or to tie the truck to the body for shipping.

If you have any issues in getting yours fixed, please let me know. I'll help you the best I can.

Thanks

On these engines, and the mogul, who is paying for the return shipping, the customer or Lionel?

On these two, Lionel will be covering the shipping. If anyone experiences anything otherwise when calling in, please let me know so I can help with that.

FYI, I'm still actively working on a solution to the Mogul. Will let everyone know when I find a fix. Again, sorry for the issue.

@Dave Olson

Hey Dave,

Little bit of a sitrep and a question. I've tinkered with the UP and reconnected the front truck assembly and driveshaft and retightened the larger screw into the mount. All is good up front. I then noticed the rear truck is loose but not between the assembly and mount but the mount and frame/internals. Is it a single screw into the truck mount from the top? It's not completely disconnected but close and would like to just tighten up. Does the cab come off separately? If I can finish this off on the workbench I would like to. As long as all the pieces are intact I'm comfortable taking things apart. Any diagrams available? Seems to be a loose screw issue all around.

Will check out the ATSF next.

Appreciate any insight.

Dave,  I'll say I did hear some rattling after I packaged mine for return to you all yesterday. I did notice it was a fairly easy engine to remove from packaging. That is, not as snug as a fit as my recent SD60E and GP30 engines.

Sending you an email on this point.

Norm Charbonneau, Wow, I like your nice layout and attention to realistic detailing. This way, the really nice NW2 Switcher looks right at home. Legacy sure makes a difference in the smooth performance slow moving great sounding work horse.  I know there have been shipping issues, from your unpacking I can see there could be a much better way to box these beauties. I would recommend having the engine be packaged vertical, sitting on its wheels.., like the UP VL Genset Diesels.   Either way, your demonstration was Fantastic....Thank You for sharing your time with us, your OGR Forum Friends...Happy New Year...

I have more or less taken apart and fixed what I could. I'm still unsure how to remove the cab @Dave Olson and how the handrails go with it?

Both are running. I'm just nursing the rear trucks when off the track.

My findings are quite honestly just loose screws. I have no idea how a top vertical mount screw could back out like these (as in factory error, to me). Bottom large screw was also too loose causing truck to drop and disconnect driveshaft. Anyway, I tightened everything and reconnected driveshafts on the SF. It's rear truck is loose as well from the top screw but still unsure on the cab removal with the handrails.

I will add my compliments to the chef on the redesign of the internals. They are well thought out. Now if only the factory could back up what you fellas are doing in NC.

Attached a photo of the culprit front screw:

Sad to see problems continue concerning these high end pieces. Nothing fun about popping off the cab and fiddle with something brand new. I'll stick to my good o'l trusty postwar NW2's

That's cool.  I have a number of P/W NW2s.

And, I have much modern and recent Lionel.

Problem is, you're missing a whole new area of model railroading fun by closing out recent production.

But, each to his/her own.

It's nice to hear someone had a good experience with an NW-2, but I won't be placing any orders for a Lionel product anytime soon.  I don't feel good about that because I'd like to support the company I grew up with.  Still have my small postwar Lionel collection and run them often.

Well, that might be your loss.

Lionel DOES make this stuff correct - even if damaged in shipping.

Do I wish that everything came out of the box and worked perfectly?????  Oh, yeah.

But that didn't even happen back in the good old PostWar days sorry to say.

Dave, I had the same problem when unboxing, that is, the drive shaft on the front truck was disengaged.  I was able to easily reinsert the drive shaft and my Santa Fe NW2 works as it should.  However the front truck seems to be a bit loose....not as tight as the rear truck.   Is it an easy fix to tighten up the screw after the shell is removed?   Or, should I return it back to Lionel.  Some guidance would be appreciated.......One last question....can someone enlighten me as to the function of these two included parts.....

Thanks-Pete

Heres a video....as you can see its a pretty good smoker too!

I have made several purchases in recent production, especially with $1,000+ steamers.  The majority had out of the box or failures shortly there after even when following instructions/using the correct power source. I even had repair turnaround times lasting up to three months. Fun? not really, but then again you are correct, to each their own......

Thanks for posting Norm, I was going to hold off until a road name that I was interested in came along, but your video sold me to try to find a Santa Fe version.

I think what people are missing here is that this platform/product has great "bones" meaning, the sound, detail and operation all can be used as is, or can be super detailed as needed. The cab alone can modeled/upgraded if wished to a much more realistic setting. The big windows just invite people to peer in and take look at what is going on. The horizontal motor can be thanked for that.

In the HO world, there has been a big surge in operations and switching in particular. This engine was sorely missing from the O scale world and combined with the slow, consistent operation should be popular for the small, switcher themed layouts.

Thanks again Norm.

Charlie
