I just received my new Lionel Mohawk locomotive and tender and got it fired up tonight.  This engine has very impressive added on detail, making it one of the finest detailed engines I have seen to date.  While it lacks many of the Legacy features such as steam whistle, blow down smoke and swinging bell, in operation, it is as smooth as a well used rail surface.  Odessey2 works great.  The fire pan glow was done particularily well imho.  Looking at the engine head on, you know you are looking at a beast.  When at rest, the cab is illuminated and the "gauges" and valve handles are superbly executed.  I tried to take pictures with my phone, but could not get good lighting to showcase the detail of this loco.

The sounds are amazing, considering the small size of the dual speakers used.  The high speed chuff gets a little annoying after a bit of running.  I would like to see/hear a video of a real steamer running at moderate to high speed to hear what the chuff sounds like.

The BIGGEST NEGATIVE feature are/is the running boards.  For Lionel to release any $1000 plus engine without diamond plate or similar detailed running boards to me is a crime!  Other people have detailed running boards at much less cost.  My CC2 Niagara is an example of how a $1000 plus engine should be detailed.  I hope SantaFe Fan reads this post and acts on it.  Now I wonder if the $1900 Big Boy will have detailed running boards.  I have a PRR Mountain coming, probably made from "old" tooling.  I wonder if it will have detailed running boards.  It wouls be VERY EASY to have added etched brass diamond plate and fastened that over the running boards.

I hope a reader can post some detailed pictures of a Mohawk to supplement this post, as words can't describe the red valve handles in various spots on the engine, and all the fine detail like the super heater.

I look forward to comments from others with this engine, or othe expensive ones and comments on the undetailed running boards on such an expensive engine.  Makes me not want to buy another, and stuck with my pre-orders.

Yeah, dunno about the "diamond plate" boards on the Mohawk, specifically, either. Some locos, some roads, sometimes...some different ways of doing it. But, I have the TMCC L2a

Mohawk and I have no complaints about it. Beautiful. If it had "diamond plate", I don't

really care; it's sweet.

It seems that, if that's his only complaint, well...meh. A modeling "crime", ah, no.

In my experience, many of the railroads that had coal burning steam locomotives, tended to have open walkways, usually with oval holes in the steel plates. On the other hand, railroads with oil burning steam locomotives tended to use the diamond tread steel plates for walkways. The more "open plates" with holes tended to allow the cinders to fall through instead of pile up on the walkways. Obviously oil burned didn't have cinder problems, so the side walkways could have been solid diamond plate.

I was wondering the same thing. I've seen only a few actual steam locos but I don't recall diamond plate.  Maybe I just missed it: always a lot to take in.

Anyway, I really like my Mohawk.  Just a splendid loco.  I'm going to run it tomorrow = thanks for reminding me.

I think the L2A Mohawk, K5 Pacific and H10 Mikado are the three of the best looking NYC Steam Locomotives.

Thanks,

Richard

After seeing the comments and pictures posted, I think that you owe Lionel a great big apology!

To Richard Gonzales, thanks for posting pictures of both the model and the prototype.  Your pic shows some of the excellent detail the Mohawk has, in a class with the Southern PS-4 Lionel made in Legacy and TMCC.  (I own both)  To RickO thanks for your picture and a video link.  I guess that is how the how speed chuffs sound on the model also.  This still is one of the finest detailed engines I have seen.

On my Lionel Niagara, the walkways have diamond shaped punch outs.  I have a 3 inch thick old (1948 vintage) locomotive book full of pics and prints.  It SEEMED as if most steamers had a grate type of walkway or open diamond plate.  So from the picture posted its not the case with the Mohawk.  Hats off to all who replied on this post, and apologies to the Mohawk Design Team who apparently got it right, and myself who got it wrong.

The final word though, is that this is a great looking model, perhaps one of the best ever, certainly in the top 3 of those in my inventory.  Nothing beats my Niagara (that I own), although I am sure there are other engines that have better detail, I just have not seen them yet.  I probably own over 14 Legacy engines.  They are in Phoenix area, and I am in NY WITH my Mohawk and a layout for the summer.  Only have TMCC here though.

I look forward to getting the Mohawk I ordered for my Father's Day gift. I bought the NY, central Mth imperial  railking set a while back, Very nice set but you can't beat the sound and detail of the new lionel legacy steam engines, I figured I will use the Mth box cars and caboose that came with the set, I hope they look ok with the more scale size engine, I have to thank Eric's trains review on the Lionel Mohawk that made my mind up and adding this one to my collection and Mario's Trains for the great price and customer service.

Thank you
Billy
