I am looking for a part for a friend. Lionel Part #6102401180, Brass Gear. It goes on the axle of an MU powered commuter car, which came in sets: 6-18304, 6-18305, and 6-18306 from 1991-1992. Lionel Customer Service Center does not have any in stock and there does not seem to be any available. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Guys, thanks for your replies. The person I am looking for the part for does his own repairs. He can not find the part anywhere. Since I use to work at the Lionel Customer Service Center I checked there yesterday. They couldn't cross check the part number. Since then I have gotten more info on it (posted in my first post) and will go back there on Monday to see what else I can find on it.

Thanks.

Lionel turned off the ability to search for products that used a part a couple of years ago.  That type of inquiry would tax the system, but dang it was a really useful feature!   I may have one in the junk bin but without being able to get the list of where the part is used, it isn't going to happen.

Bill - Ask Mike to turn the feature back on!!!  I tried and couldn't talk him into it but you may have better luck in a face to face.

Bill:

Parts for MTH-made Lionel items from 20+ years ago are tough to find.

Here's what I'd do... start with this part number, which is currently available from Lionel:

86108329570

This was the truck used on the Lionel-made MU cars from 2000. That shiny brass gear shown in the photo MIGHT be your gear. Here's what I'd do:

1) Do a visual comparison of the two gears.

2) Ask Lionel to provide the part number for that particular gear. I don't think a complete set of exploded drawings for the 2000 issue of those cars was ever done.

3) If all the above goes OK, you MIGHT learn there's another part number for that gear in which to search. (But it doesn't look like there's one under the 610-8329-XXX series.)

4) As a back-up, you may want to consider purchasing the entire truck assembly from Lionel, providing that nothing major has been changed other than the coupler mount for ElectroCouplers.

I hope this helps-

If you disassemble the truck, and the center gear is on a shaft that has the center outer gear on it, you can buy these from any postwar parts dealer. It is used on the GP7/9 locos, if you contact any reputable parts guy they can sell you one or two, get two just in case. I had a modern Lionel FT Santa Fe loco, and the postwar gear and shaft assembly I had on hand from my GP9 loco fit perfectly. Will check for the postwar part number tomorrow and get back to you.
