These are plagued with quality issues, the newer can motors tends to over heat, the bell feature tended to not work as well, smoke problems, and now that they are out of warranty... I have seen a few go for as low as 600.00... there nice if they work.

And of course it is a model of an odd engine.

The Banshee whistle is pretty cool though.

"These are plagued with quality issues, the newer can motors tends to over heat,"

Replace with a nice, fat 9000-class Pittman?

"the bell feature tended to not work"

Gimmick I don't care about

"smoke problems,"

never run with smoke anyhow

"and now that they are out of warranty"

Well,  if you change out the motor it won't matter

"... I have seen a few go for as low as 600.00"

Tempting, very tempting.

I have one and really like the engine.  I purchased it because I wanted at least one engine with the swinging bell feature and whistle smoke feature.  I run it often with an 8 to 10 car consist and have never had a problem.  You should keep in mind that although it is articulated, it was a switch engine.  It is also quite small for an articulated engine (smaller that the Lionel ATSF Northern 3751).

I too would purchase them at $600 because I know the are worth more than that.

Happy railroading,

Don
