Mike, I can help you some.  Here is a link to a very good parts supplier that has helped me out several times.  He works limited hours so check his home page and respect his limits.

The cattle car & corral parts are half way down page 127.  Anything with a 6-3656-prefix is fair game.  I am still trying to find you a diagram to make sense of the numbers.

Here is a pic  of the car diagram from the Greenberg Repair Manual.

You can order the truck coupler plate with the sliding shoe and connection wire from Lionel. Search for part number 6000483002. ~$12. 

You will also need replacement "Adhesive Washers" (3656-17) They are made from foam and wear out.

Interesting about that spring idea (which I recalled reading years ago). I have two cattle cars that I am re-habbing and have decided to give the spring idea a shot. I have tried various forms of those replacement "pads" without success.

Picked up a spring assortment pack and will give it a go. If it works I'll report here.

Definitely let us know how the springs work.  I'd like to give this idea a try on a spare cattle coral I have but have not had any luck finding the right spring.  I'm hoping you have better luck and can provide a part # to order.

Thanks for the diagram and parts lists!  Exactly what i am looking for.  Looks like I need a brush spring (2020M-34) and 8 of the adhesive washers (3656-17).  Roughly a couple of bucks in parts.

Do you know of any places that do not have a $40 minimum required or a local parts person in Kansas City?

Try Jeff Kane at the Train Tender for parts.  Also, the foam pads you can buy for eye glasses to ease the nose piece work super for replacing the pads in a cattle car and corral.

I bought an assortment pack from Harbor Freight. I think it was even mentioned in one of the old threads on using springs. Got way more than I need for this project but figure I can use them for other things.

The eye glass pads are not for use with the rail track.  They are great for replacing the old pads under the metal runways/tracks which the cattle use to move through the car and across the platform.  They are a good thickness and have glue on one side.
