Like the title says... I have a Type 1011 transformer I got in a recent haul. I'm also trying to get a setup for my best friend's 9 year old son. I got him a Lionel branded Polar Express set our museum was tossing because it was missing a tender (the cheap $50 battery operated set, not the nicer Polar Express). Anyways... I also have some basic starter sets (the kind that probably retailed for like $99 originally back in the 90s). Are those sets AC or DC? And is the Type 1011 an AC or DC transformer?

If that transformer is not the right output, what would y'all suggest? I'm looking for something cheap, obviously. I was going to set him up with some 027 track that I know I won't be using anymore.

Oh, and before anyone asks... no, I don't have my Fluke multimeter handy, otherwise I'd check it myself (I misplaced it somewhere).

If the motor has a permanent magnet field, like a can motor, it is DC only. If the motor has a wound field it will run on both AC and DC.   If the loco has a circuit board in it, read the instructions.

Definitely doesn't have a circuit board, AFAIK. It's literally one of those really basic starter locomotives. I know Lionel had some DC starter sets in the 90s, because that was my first set (some crappy Atlantic Coast Line set).
