Does anyone know what motor was used to create the 289E. The body was the same as the 1689E with an 0 gauge motor installed, to make the 289E. Ironically from what I have seen with the body that was used for the 1689E actually has a casting number inside the body that shows 289-1. I haven't found anything to pinpoint what motor Lionel used for the 289, but can only tell that it is a double reduction gear motor. Anyone have a clue??? Thanks.

It used the 259E/264E motor unit with special brackets to fit it to the casting. The brackets are unique to the 289E.
I have to presume from your reply that you own one, or know for sure that those motors are the right one. The usual source of Prewar stuff Olsens's library doesn't have anything in the Library to cover the 289 makeup. I will have to look at the motors you suggested, and thanks.
I have had many pass through my hands over the years, and am quite familiar with them. The motor in question can be found in the 259E, 264E, and 265E locos. The only difference besides the brackets, is that the e unit lever was bent 90 degrees to protrude into the cab as the 289E had no E unit slot cut into the casting. The 1689E had a slot, making the bodies not interchangeable.
Wheels and side rods different as well. E unit lever is bent at 90 degress and accesses through cap with no slot in top of shell. I have several of these locos, in black and gunmetal and different tenders.
