Lionel prewar couplers

If you're asking about early prewar & late prewar. The answer is, "Yes".

An early pre-war coupler commonly called a Hook and Loop in the top photo.

A Latch coupler in the 2nd photo. This coupler works with a Lionel Box coupler the Hook and Loop does not. The Latch coupler and Hook and Loop do not work together.

Latch style and box style couplers can work together without issues.

Hook and loop couplers cannot work with either latch or box style couplers, but, Lionel made what they called a combination coupler. It was a latch style coupler that had the loop portion of a hook and loop coupler, shown below on these 710 series cars. It allowed older hook and loop cars to be attached to latch coupler equipped cars.
